Salo Expected By N.Y. Isles

STOCKHOLM -- Swedish goalkeeper Tommy Salo could join the New York Islanders in the National Hockey League next season, Stockholm's Aftonbladet daily reported.

Salo, 23, stood in for Hakon Algotsson in Sweden's dramatic final penalty shoot-out victory over Canada at the Lillehammer Winter Olympics on Sunday.

The paper quoted Islanders' director Don Maloney as saying Salo was mature enough to play in the NHL. "We want him over in the autumn in our training camp," Maloney told Aftonbladet.

Salo made the decisive save, stopping a penalty shot by Paul Kariya after his team mate Peter Forsberg had just netted a daring one-handed backhand.

Forsberg, 20, is set to join the Quebec Nordiques on a contract worth up to $10 million.
