Rostropovich Successor

Conductor Leonard Slatkin will succeed Russian emigre Mstislav Rostropovich as the new music director of the National Symphony Orchestra, Kennedy Center officials announced.

Now the conductor of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, Slatkin, 49, will take over when Rostropovich, 67, who was born in the former Soviet Union, retires at the end of the 1993-94 season.

Slatkin,acclaimed as one of America's top conductors, will be only the fifth music director of the Washington-based symphony since 1931.
