Peace Close in Mexico

Peace negotiatiors between Maya Indian rebels in southern Mexico and the government expect a draft peace accord will be completed by Wednesday.

San Cristobal's Roman Catholic Bishop Samuel Ruiz said a peace declaration to end the rebels' two-month-old uprising was "already drawn up and agreed in fundamental terms" and that both sides had agreed to include two resolutions on non-binding national democratic reforms.

Some 2,000 Zapatista guerrillas began their uprising by seizing several towns and declaring war on New Year's Day. The government says 145 people were killed in the first week of fighting.
