French Student Protest

Thousands of students took to the streets of France again Tuesday as a law allowing employers to pay youth less than minimum wage took effect despite violent protests since last week.

Protests injured at least 55 riot police on Monday, one seriously, authorities said.

Heartened by local elections over the weekend that confirmed his conservatives' popularity, Prime Minister Edouard Balladur has refused to withdraw the law aimed at boosting employment by paying young employees 80 percent of minimum wage.

Thousands of students demonstrated Tuesday in Lyon, Saint-Etienne, Valence, Perpignan, Auch, Albi and Cahors.
