China Blasts U.S.

China's state-run New China News Agency has attacked U.S human rights policies on China in an unusually fierce commentary on the eve of talks here with the State Department's chief official for human rights.

John Shattuck, assistant secretary of state for human rights, arrived in Beijing over the weekend to begin discussions on human rights issues.

Shattuck is expected to outline President Bill Clinton's human rights conditions for extending China's most-favored-nation trading status.

The news agency commentary suggests that China will not yield easily. "Of course, the human rights situation in China is not completely satisfactory," it said Sunday, adding that it is "better than the United States in many aspects."
