5-Set Final for Women

The women's final at the 1995 Australian Open tennis championships will be played over the best-of-five sets, Tennis Australia president Geoff Pollard announced Tuesday.

The Australian Open is the first of the four Grand Slam tournaments to introduce a best-of-five format for women's finals.

"We are very proud to be at the vanguard of change," Pollard said. "There has been a lot of interest in a five-set women's final for some time. Given the athleticism and professionalism of the elite women's players, the time is right."
