Tranmere Eyes Final

Tranmere Rovers were poised for the first major cup final of their 110-year history after a shock 3-1 win over Aston Villa in the first leg of their League Cup semifinal.

Tranmere, which plays in the first division and which has always lived in the shadow of its Merseyside neighbors Liverpool and Everton, stunned premier league rival Villa on Wednesday with two goals in the first 25 minutes from defenders Ian Nolan and Mark Hughes.

John Aldridge scored Tranmere's third after 78 minutes. Villa scored a 90th minute goal from Dalian Atkinson.
