Sri Lanka Short of Win

A Sri Lankan effort to pull off a sensational victory over India in the first one-day international fell short by just eight runs.

Chasing India's total of 246 in 50 overs at an asking rate of 4.92 runs an over, Sri Lanka, whitewashed in the three-test series, were well up with the run rate Tuesday until the closing stages.

Aravinda de Silva, who top scored for Sri Lanka with 69, made a fine return to form. But the pace slackened as Sri Lanka lost quick wickets and with one over to go they needed 16 runs to win.
