Solzhenitsyn's Crusade

Exiled Russian author Alexander Solzhenitsyn, preparing to go home after 20 years, says he expects fierce resistance, even physical threats, against his bid to serve as a moral compass for a nation in turmoil.

He told the New Yorker magazine that he was returning, his literary work behind him, to fulfil his duty to Russian society, not to play an overt political role.

"My role can only be moral. What other role can I have?" he said in an interview in the magazine's latest issue.
