Snegur: 'No' to Union

Moldovan President Mircea Snegur urged his supporters to back the full independence of their tiny former Soviet republic, rejecting calls for merger with Romania or the division of their state.

"Nobody can rub out the word 'Moldovan' from centuries-old icons and religious books, from the walls of Moldovan churches," Snegur told some 1,900 participants at a congress in the capital Kishinyov on Saturday.

Up to 20 percent of the electorate are expected to vote for parties favoring union with Romania in Feb. 27 parliamentary elections, but agrarians are expected to emerge as the largest party.

A day earlier Snegur had postponed a referendum on Moldovan independence and territorial integrity to March 6. The referendum had been planned for the day of the parliamentary polls.
