Quake Wracks Sumatra

A powerful earthquake measuring at least 6.5 on the Richter scale killed at least 127 people and injured nearly 1,000 in a mountainous area of Sumatra island on Wednesday, a regional official said.

Eighteen hours after the quake struck, details from the worst affected area, Liwa, in a southwestern mountain range, remained sketchy. The remote town was reported to be cut off.

Officials in Bandar Lampung, 120 kilometers away, said 75 percent of Liwa had been damaged or destroyed and relief convoys were unable to get through.
