Police Accused of Torture

Russian police still use drugs, beatings, electric shock and other forms of torture to extract confessions from suspects, Izvestia said Friday.

The newspaper recounted several cases in which people accused of varying crimes, from bribery to rape, have been tortured by police since the late 1980s.

Izvestia's investigation has prompted an official inquiry into the beatings of three soldiers accused of rape in the Russian Far East. Two of the suspects died in police custody; all three were later found innocent, the newspaper said.

"Today we are publishing material showing that cruel and unusual methods of pressure continue to be used on people under arrest in Russian jails," Izvestia wrote.
