PLO Police Deal Near

Israel's chief negotiator in talks with the PLO said Wednesday the two sides were close to agreement on how to set up a Palestinian police force in the autonomous areas of Jericho and the Gaza Strip.

Amnon Shahak, speaking at the start of a third day of talks on disputes holding up Israeli withdrawal and Palestinian self-rule, said a draft paper covering the size and duties of the Palestinian police force was "almost achieved." The force is to be made up mostly of ex-guerrillas.

But the two sides were working towards a wide-ranging agreement on all security disputes and would not sign a separate agreement on the police force, he said.
