Pickering: Increase Security

U.S. Ambassador Thomas Pickering on Wednesday urged the U.S. business community in Moscow to help found a country council by the end of this month to improve security for Americans in Moscow.

"We are very concerned that fear of crime will deter U.S. businesses from investing here," Pickering told business people gathered at a U.S. Chamber of Commerce luncheon.

The country council, which would be composed of embassy officials and representatives from the local business community, would serve as an information exchange, provide security training and education, and be a source for emergency planning, Pickering said.

Pickering reiterated U.S. government support for American investors in Russia, saying it would help as far as it can in taxation and the fight against corruption.
