NBA Team for Canada

After months of negotiations, the government of Ontario and the National Basketball Association have reached a deal clearing the way for Canada's first NBA team.

Under a deal announced Thursday, the NBA will contribute $1.1 million to cancer research and the province will eliminate professional basketball betting.

"It's an effective compromise and a fair deal for the people of Ontario, for the NBA and for the franchise," said Ontario premier Bob Rae. The team will begin play in the 1995-1996 season.
