Iran Arrests 20 for Plot

Iran said Monday it has arrested more than 20 people in a plot to kill President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani and held the United States and Israel responsible.

The Iranian news agency IRNA said Information Minister Ali Fallahiyan, head of Iranian intelligence, told the newspaper Hamshahri a man held after shots were fired when Rafsanjani was making a speech last Tuesday was a member of a "terrorist group."

More than 20 persons "who have been part of this network" had been arrested, it quoted the minister as saying.

Fallahiyan named the man as Kourosh Nik Akhtar. He had so far been identified only by his first name.
