Illegal Workers Drown

The bodies of 42 people have been recovered after a boat ferrying illegal Burmese workers home capsized in a southern Thai river, officials said Monday, but the final death toll is expected to be much higher.

Port supervisors said they believe 80 to 90 victims are still pinned to the riverbed by the vessel, which was meters froma pier when it capsized. Other bodies were swept away down the Hau Kiew Kohsui River to the sea.

The officials said they had identified 82 survivors of the tragedy, which happened Saturday night, and deported them to Burma.

The boat, carrying at least 250 people, turned over just meters away from a private pier as it was taking a load of workers home to Burma.
