German Strike Looms

Germany's engineering industry edged closer to a potentially crippling strike Thursday when IG Metall union officials in three regions called on the union's main board to call a strike ballot without delay.

Tens of thousands of workers downed tools as union wages commissions in Berlin and in the states of Hesse and Bavaria met to urge the union's main board to call a ballot of its members at a meeting on Monday.

Werner Neugebauer, head of the union's Bavarian section, warned that a major conflict would break out in the engineering industry if strikes began from March 7.

The union had been seeking a compromise with the employers for weeks, he said, "but they just cold-shoulder us."
