Georgians To Bury President

TBILISI, Georgia -- A joint commission of Georgian and Chechen officials left Tbilisi for western Georgia on Thursday to locate the remains of the ousted president, Zviad Gamsakhurdia, and have it flown out of the country for burial.

The commission went to the town of Senaki from which it was to travel to a spot where Gamsakhurdia's body is being kept. After visual identification of the corpse by Georgian authorities, Chechen officials would be allowed to fly it to Chechnya under a deal reached on Wednesday.

The agreement should end the saga surrounding the death of Gamsakhurdia, who died at the end of last year -- possibly by his own hand -- after the failure of an armed comeback attempt.

His body's whereabouts were, until Thursday, known only to his family and aides in Chechnya.

A deal for returning Gamsakhurdia's remains to Chechnya for burial had been blocked because of his widow's refusal to allow an autopsy as demanded by Georgian authorities.

But Georgia waived its insistence on this earlier this week.
