Foreigners Targeted

Two gunmen opened fire at a bus carrying eight Romanian and two Egyptian engineers in the south Egyptian city of Assiut at dawn on Monday but no one was hurt, security sources said.

It was the first attack on foreigners in Egypt this year and the first since the militant Gama'a al-Islamiya told tourists and foreign investors earlier this month that they should leave the country for their own safety.

Assiut is one of the centers of the Gama'a, the violent group trying to overthrow the government and replace it with a strict Islamic government.

In a total of 11 attacks since October 1992, three foreigners have been killed.
