Family Feuds for House

A family feud over the landmark home of the Russian architect Konstantin Melnikov escalated Monday when a court representative, after being blocked from entering the house, said she would return later to force entry if necessary.

The representative was barred from entering the gate to the garden by Yekaterina Melnikova, daughter of the architect's son, Viktor Melnikov, 79, who has lived in the house since 1929. The architect's daughter, Lyudmila Melnikova, 80, is suing for what she believes is her legal right to half the house and its contents. The court representative had come to conduct an inventory.

"This is all being done to upset my father. It's outrageous," said Yekaterina Melnikov, adding that her father would appeal the decision recognizing Lyudmila Melnikov's right to half the house.
