Car Theft Crackdown

Moscow police have launched a large-scale operation to check all state and private parking lots for stolen cars, a police spokesman said Monday.

Igor Zyryulnikov said police began Saturday to check parking lots and that traffic police would increase use of road blocks to find stolen cars until Feb. 20.

"The main cause for the operation is the considerable increase of car thefts in Moscow," he said.

According to police, there were 15,749 car thefts in Moscow in 1993, twice as many as in 1992. Every day 60 cars are stolen but police find only 30.
