Bidding War Yields No Victor

NEW YORK -- The business world is odd sometimes. The struggle for U.S. media giant Paramount Communications has kept Wall Street on edge for five months, betting which company would win the battle. Now it's over, and the only clear victors are supporting players.

Long-term Paramount shareholders, for example, make out like bandits. If they got in two years ago when the stock was around $40 a share, they will almost double their money.

Even those who bought last summer -- just before the takeover battle began -- will reap almost a 40 percent gain.
