Balladur Under Fire

French Prime Minister Balladur was accused of political meddling in the media Wednesday by the founder of the pay-TV channel Canal Plus, who quit, accusing him of putting cronies in control of key companies.

Andre Rousselet, who resigned as Canal Plus chairman on Monday after a cartel of big business shareholders effectively seized control, denounced the conservative premier in an article in the newspaper Le Monde.

"Day by day, this man spins his web, placing at the controls of the biggest groups some 15 men hand-picked for their devotion to him alone, and systematically evicting all those who are not of the same obedience," Rousselet wrote.

On Monday, Balladur denied any involvement in the boardroom coup.
