Apartheid Party in Race

The ruling National Party, which over four decades ago created apartheid to entrench white power in South Africa, registered on Friday for the watershed all-race election ending centuries of minority dominance.

Describing the registration as "a momentous moment," Foreign Minister Pik Botha said his party was going all-out to win the April 26-28 election and was drawing increasing numbers of people of color to its ranks.

Botha described as a serious issue the absence from the transition to majority rule of right-wing black and white parties and threats by white hardliners to disrupt the poll.
