American's Killer Jailed

A former Georgian soldier, 21, was found guilty Monday and sentenced to 15 years in prison for murdering Fred Woodruff, reportedly the CIA's chief in Georgia.

Anzor Sharmaidze, 21, initially admitted shooting Woodruff on a road outside Tbilisi last Aug. 8. During the month-long trial, however, he changed his testimony and claimed he had made a false confession under torture.

Chief Judge Jamal Leonidze announced Monday that the three presiding judges found Sharmaidze's testimony "unreliable" and sentenced him to 15 years hard labor, the maximum prison term under Georgian law.

Investigators think the murder was random and not politically motivated.
