Typhoon Kills 12

MANILA ) -- Strong winds and heavy rains from typhoon Axel have killed at least 12 people in the central Philippines and caused a power blackout on the nation's main island, officials said Thursday.

Hundreds of people lost their homes, and thousands fled to safer areas.

Flood waters breached a dam Wednesday, drowning five people and injuring 25 in Bacolod City, 480 kilometers southeast of Manila, Red Cross spokeswoman Lourdes Masing said.

In Tacloban City, capital of Leyte province, seven people were dead and 17 missing after the typhoon swept through.
