Taipei Cabbies Riot

TAIPEI () -- About 500 Taipei taxi drivers and their supporters who were mourning a dead colleague tossed firebombs and rocks at riot police before dawn Thursday, injuring 11 people, police said.

The clash erupted when 1,000 riot police tried to disperse the drivers, who were carrying an empty coffin and occupying a street outside the President Hotel, where a cabbie, Tai Cheng-chang, was killed and three other people were injured Wednesday in a brawl with hotel clerks over parking spaces .

The drivers involved in the brawl also support declaring Taiwan's independence from China, and claimed the hotel is run by a member of a group that wants to see Taiwan and China reunited.
