SWAPO Wins Vote

WINDHOEK, Namibia ) -- President Sam Nujoma and his ruling SWAPO party crushed opposition parties in Namibia's first postindependence elections, which were declared fair despite possible irregularities.

SWAPO, which led the independence struggle against neighboring South Africa, won a majority big enough to allow the new parliament to rewrite the constitution.

Electoral commission head Judge Johan Strydom said Tuesday night SWAPO won 53 of the 72 parliamentary seats, 11 more than it had in the previous house. The main opposition Democratic Turnhalle Alliance won only 15 seats, six fewer than before
