Separatist Loses Leg

OTTAWA () -- Quebec's most popular separatist leader has had a leg amputated in emergency surgery and news reports say he is fighting for his life against a deadly flesh-eating disease.

Lucien Bouchard was in serious, but stable condition in intensive care at a Montreal hospital after doctors amputated his left leg, his press spokeswoman Marthe Lawrence said.

But the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reported that Bouchard was stricken with the Streptococcus A bacteria, an uncommon disease medically known as necrotizing fasciitis that rapidly destroys skin and tissue, and his condition was a matter of life and death.
