Coach Bengtson Dies

SAN DIEGO () -- Phil Bengtson, who coached the Green Bay Packers following the historic reign of Vince Lombardi, has died.

Bengtson, who rose from Lombardi's assistant head coach and defensive coordinator to hold the top position in 1968-70, died Sunday at his home in San Diego after a long illness. He was 81.

As a head coach, Bengtson compiled a 20-21-1 record, but it was his tough, stingy defenses that were credited with helping the Packers to NFL championships in 1961, 1962 and 1965.
