Chechnya's Mujahedin

Moscow () -- Russian border guards defending the Tajikistan frontier from incursions from Afghanistan may soon be grappling with the same adversaries in Chechnya, said an official for the Federal Border Guard Service.

An officer for the service said Tuesday a detachment of guards, including some who had served on the Tajik-Afghan border, would be sent to the North Caucasus in the next few days. "I do not exclude the possibility that they could encounter mujahedin," he said.

Olga Ignatova, a spokeswoman for the temporary press center on Russian military operations in Chechnya, said Chechen leader Dzhokhar Dudayev had at his disposal a number of mercenary units, including Afghan mujahedin.
