Berlusconi Challenge

ROME () -- Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi will address parliament Wednesday at the start of a two-day no-confidence debate that is widely expected to bring down his stormy seven-month-old government.

Berlusconi said Monday night his supporters would take to the streets in a "great tide" of protest if he is toppled, and he called for fresh elections as fast as possible.

The federalist League, a partner in the Berlusconi coalition, has submitted one of three no-confidence motions against the prime minister in tandem with the Popular Party.

League leader Umberto Bossi says he has 325 of the 630 Chamber votes, enough to oust Berlusconi.
