Western Aid to Kiev

KIEV () -- Western countries and the European Union announced more than $234 million in new aid to Ukraine on Tuesday to help the former Soviet republic cope with the costs of ridding itself of nuclear weapons.

The assistance, outlined in a joint statement by 14 countries and the EU, was announced on the eve of an expected debate in the Ukrainian parliament on joining the 1968 Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty.

Ukrinform news agency said the statement was read during a meeting of the countries' ambassadors with President Leonid Kuchma.
