UN Lauds Peacekeepers

TBILISI, Georgia () -- United Nations' Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali praised Russia's peacekeeping efforts in Georgia but indicated Wednesday that the UN might seek stronger involvement.

"The cooperation between the troops of the Commonwealth of Independent States and the UN observers is excellent," he told a news conference.

Russian troops are also overseeing the return of 250,000 ethnic Georgians who fled Abkhazia last year.

Boutros-Ghali said that the second phase of this operation would be the UN phase, "to be decided by the Security Council."

A UN-chaired meeting between Russian, Georgian and Abkhaz representatives, to speed up the repatriation, is due to take place Nov. 14 in Geneva.
