Ukraine Lifts Immunity

KIEV () -- Ukraine's parliament agreed Tuesday to lift the immunity of a former prime minister and to launch legal proceedings against him in connection with illegal deals costing the former Soviet republic $25 million.

Deputies voted overwhelmingly to allow the public prosecutor to pursue allegations against Yefim Zvyagilsky, acting prime minister from October 1993 to June 1994.

Zvyagilsky left Ukraine on a diplomatic passport and is currently in Israel.

Public Prosecutor Vladislav Datsyuk said he was gathering evidence on charges of theft and grand larceny against Zvyagilsky for the sale of aviation fuel at cut-rate prices to a Greek firm and other matters.
