Tougher Drug Testing

BARCELONA, Spain -- Track and field athletes who test positive for banned substances will be suspended immediately based on the first tested sample, the sport's governing body decided.

The Council of the International Amateur Athletic Federation voted unanimously Monday to dispense with a mandatory second analysis of an athlete's urine sample when the first sample tests positive. The athlete or his national federation, however, will still be able to request that the so-called "B'' sample be tested.
