Mir Crew in Record Bid

MOSCOW () -- The Mir space station has completed its 50,000th orbit of Earth as two of the three cosmonauts on board continue their bids for new endurance records.

On Thursday, a smiling Dr. Valery Polyakov was shown on Independent Television news as he closed in on the record of 366 days in space. By the time he leaves next spring, he is to have spent 443 days on board the Mir.

Also on board are commander Alexander Viktorenko and engineer Yelena Kondakova, who plans to stay in space for nearly six months, setting a duration record for women.
