Ilyushin Jet, U.S. Fittings

Ilyushin will start making its new Il-96M wide-bodied jet, the first Russian aircraft to be fitted with both U.S. engines and flight controls, in April next year, a factory official said Tuesday.

Vyacheslav Salikov, chief engineer at the factory which will make the four-engine jet, said he expected officials from U.S. engine-maker Pratt and Whitney and avionics company Rockwell Collins to arrive soon at the Voronezh plant in southern Russia.

Russian aviation officials hope that the jet, capable of flying from Moscow to New York without stopping, will help them break into the huge international market for airliners.

The plane is fitted with Rockwell flight controls, radios, satellite communications, a collision avoidance system and a weather radar.
