Iliescu Promises Pardon

BUCHAREST () -- A British couple sentenced to 28 months in jail for trying to smuggle a baby out of Romania saw their hopes buoyed Wednesday when Romanian President Ion Iliescu said he would pardon them if their legal appeal failed.

Bernadette and Adrian Mooney were the first foreigners convicted for violating a 1992 adoption law passed to end baby trafficking after the fall of communism in 1989.

The couple's appeal is due to be heard Nov. 9.
