Gaidar Libel Upheld

MOSCOW () -- A Moscow court has upheld a libel judgment against reformer Yegor Gaidar, who was ordered to pay ultranationalist Vladimir Zhirinovsky 1 million rubles ($320) for calling him a fascist.

The Moscow City Court issued its ruling Monday, Interfax said.

Gaidar, a former prime minister and the leader of the Russia's Choice faction in parliament, wrote an article May 17 in the daily Izvestia describing Zhirinovsky as Russia's most popular fascist leader.

Gaidar's attorney, Genri Reznik, told Interfax that his client could not have libeled Zhirinovsky because fascism has not been banned in Russia.
