MAPUTO, Mozambique ) -- The leftist ruling party has taken a substantial lead in Mozambique's first multiparty election, according to an unofficial survey Monday by the United Nations. President Joaquim Chissano and his Mozambique Liberation Front, Frelimo, had just over 50 percent of the vote, based on results from about 400 polling stations randomly selected from the nation's 7,444 stations.

Frelimo's main opposition, the former rebel Mozambique National Resistance, know as Renamo, had about 30 percent of the vote, the survey said. Voting took place Thursday to Saturday.
