Estonia Door Raised

STOCKHOLM () -- The bow door of the Estonia ferry, which sank in the Baltic Sea in September killing more than 900 people, was lifted to the surface of the sea Friday, Swedish navy officials said.

They said the 57-ton bow door, which sheared off, causing the disaster, would be towed by barges to a Finnish port for close examination.

Also Friday, a Swedish daily reported that the Estonian captain of a cargo ferry owned by the part-owners of the Estonia had been fired.

A month after the Estonia disaster, the captain left Stockholm harbor for Tallinn with so much alcohol in his blood he should have been unconscious, Dagens Nyheter quoted Estonian media as saying.
