East Timorese Riot

DILI, East Timor () -- Several hundred East Timorese chanting pro-independence slogans clashed with Indonesian civilians and security forces Friday in the latest outbreak of unrest in the capital Dili, witnesses said.

East Timorese protesters in central Dili attacked two men believed to be Indonesians, kicking and beating them and sparking clashes between some 500 youths and a group of Indonesian civilians throwing rocks. Police and security forces fired several canisters of tear gas to disperse the crowd.

It was the first such incident since three days of protests, falling during the conference of Asia-Pacific region leaders, subsided Tuesday.
