Berlusconi Forces Vote

ROME () -- Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi called a confidence vote in parliament Tuesday on cornerstone pension reforms in Italy's 1995 budget bill.

The move comes one day after the prime minister's center-right coalition won an earlier confidence vote on an illegal building amnesty -- a key revenue-raising measure in the budget -- after seven hours of filibustering by the leftist opposition, which has accused Berlusconi of riding roughshod over parliament.

The decision to hold a new confidence vote Wednesday risks angering the opposition again and infuriating trade unions, who have threatened to strike, and the federalist Northern League party in Berlusconi's coalition, who want pension reforms toned down.
