AvtoVAZ Output Down

MOSCOW () -- October was the "worst ever month" for Russian carmaker AvtoVAZ and 1994 output is expected to be well below last year's levels, Interfax quoted General Director Vladimir Kadannikov as saying.

Kadannikov said AvtoVAZ, maker of Lada cars, expected output to fall to 520,000 units this year, from 660,000 in 1993 and well below planned levels of 650,000. October output was 17,396 units, less than one third of planned levels, due to strikes at the start of the month and rising costs for materials.

The firm plan to draw up a new production plan by Nov. 20. AvtoVAZ has found it hard to compete with imported cars, despite high tariffs on imports.
