Assassination Trial

PARIS () -- The alleged killers of exiled Iranian prime minister Shapour Bakhtiar went on trial Wednesday amid massive security in central Paris.

In the dock were Ali Vakili Rad, accused of being one of three men who strangled and knifed to death the former prime minister in the Paris suburb of Suresnes; Zeynal Sarhadi, a great-nephew of Iranian President Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, accused of organizing their escape; and Massoud Hendi, suspected of giving logistical assistance to the assassins.

Six others involved in the assassination are being tried in absentia.

The prosecution will present evidence implicating the Iranian authorities in organizing the murder. The Tehran government has denied any role.
