Train Halt Sparks Riot

BOMBAY () -- Thousands of angry commuters Friday set fire to trains, platform stalls and a bus in the second violent protest in a week against Bombay train delays, railway officials said.

At least 28 people were injured, six of them when police opened fire to quell rioters. Police said 22 people were hurt in stone-throwing, among them two top railway police officials who had rushed to the scene where one train was in flames.

The rioters went on the rampage after they were left stranded by the breakdown of a local train on the city's Western Railway.

It was the second outbreak of rioting by angry commuters in a week. Last Friday, thousands of people went on the rampage at 11 suburban stations after a train derailment forced the cancellation of 500 trains into Bombay.
