Tory Morale Dips

BOURNEMOUTH, England () -- The chairman of Britain's Conservatives tried Tuesday to revive sagging morale as the party's conference opened, with a promise the Tories could win a fifth straight election.

Jeremy Hanley, who launched a scathing attack on opposition leader Tony Blair, said the Conservatives had to cut through Labour rhetoric to the reality of Prime Minister John Major's successful record.

The Conservative Party, which is trailing in opinion polls, has been dogged by scandal and unnerved by Blair's confident performance at the Labour Party conference last week.

Former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher attended the conference looking drawn and pale and refusing to comment on allegations that her son, Mark, had profited from a giant arms deal that she signed.
