Burundi Fighting Flares

BUJUMBURA, Burundi () -- At least 20 people have been killed in clashes in northwestern Burundi between the Tutsi-dominated army and extremist Hutu gunmen, officials said Tuesday.

A military source identified the attackers in the northwest as Hutus from the defeated Rwandan army using South African-made assault rifles, which were supplied to Rwanda and not Burundi.

Officials have said Rwandan troops who fled into Burundi with 200,000 Rwandan refugees during three months of civil war and massacres until July were fuelling ethnic hatreds in the north.
